Want a little taste of the series?

Here is the back cover description of the first book, Magic Bites……….

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for magic…

One moment magic dominates, and cars stall and guns fail. The next, technology takes over and the defensive spells no longer protect your house from monsters. Here skyscrapers topple under onslaught of magic; werebears and werehyenas prowl through the ruined streets; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.

In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, she must choose to do nothing and remain safe or to pursue his preternatural killer. Hiding is easy, but the right choice is rarely easy…

How did I choose and/or find this series?

I purchased the first book of this series before I had the rather large obsession with collection any and every fantasy series. I had just finished all the Sookie Stackhouse series and was looking for something else, something similar, to read so I googled “What to read next?” and this site came up. I found it there and went same day to purchase the first book.

Now, to stick to the flow of my site, I shall answer the FOUR questions I use to choose a series.

* What is the world like? Is it magical?

Yes, it is magical. It is very magical. With the genre it is labeled under, Urban Fantasy, it is set in Atlanta, Georgia but it is not the typical Atlanta we know and love (or hate) today. At any given moment a barrier falls and magic is running wild in the city. The case of the barrier, we do not know, other than it has always happened that way. When the barrier is down, magic causes crazy things to happen. But suddenly, without any warning (like we have with the weather warnings to help us prepare) the barrier goes back up and all things magical lose their power allowing technology and regular humans to rule again.

* What kind of Supernatural beings/things are involved?

We have vampires and shifters (who have as of now just been mentioned), witches, wizards who all have extraordinary abilities that can wreak havoc but also those good ones who are just trying to live day by day. We also have Mercenaries…those who work for non governmental agencies helping to control the magic when the barrier falls. The Mercenaries are not magical per say, but they have the strength and abilities that can be mirrored to magical abilities.

* What kind of powers do the inhabitants of the world have?

The witches and wizards have the regular magical powers, casting spells and whatnot. However, they do not use wands…one could say they practice only non verbal spells. The vampires have eternal life, super strength and need blood to survive. The Mercenaries are highly trained and skilled fighters that also have the access to amazing technological weaponry to use trying to keep the peace.

* Is the series more than a trilogy? Has it ended or is it still growing?

Yes, it is more than a trilogy, currently three books are out and the fourth is being released this year. The series has not ended and there are not talks of ending it just yet, so it is still growing.

With the help from the site that lit a fire under my Fantasy book series collection, Epic-Fantasy.com and “Explore the Different Types of Fantasy Literature” , an Amazon post by Write to the Bone we have a nice little introduction of the various genres within Fantasy. Many series can be categorized within more than one genre since they combine an Epic Fantasy plot with hints of some Dark Fantasy or an Urban Fantasy series can contains some Science Fantasy elements. This is just a basic ‘catch the drift” overview of the wonderful world of Fantasy’s many different genres.

Epic / High Fantasy

In an elaborately developed world, the good guys—usually a common member of a Medieval-type society—must face off against a sorcerer of sorts who personifies evil. The world is at stake and the hero must do something to return it back to normal. Epic / High Fantasy is an all encompassing sub genre that covers any work that has a fantasy setting and a protagonist that undertakes a quest of epic proportions. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings is a popular series that embodies the Epic and High Fantasy genre.

High Fantasy examples:

J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings), by J. R. R. Tolkien

The Sword of Shannara (Shannara Series), by Terry Brooks

The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician’s Gambit, by David Eddings

Heroic Fantasy

The protagonist is a youth–such as a commoner, a prince, or a sorcerer—who must fulfill their duty to save the world. The commoner could be an heir to the throne must go on a journey to gain what is rightfully theirs. The prince must defend his kingdom. The sorcerer must choose whether or not to use his power for good or evil. This type of fantasy often places a strong emphasis on good versus evil and the protagonist of the story is often reluctant to take up the challenge. Heroic Fantasy is closely related to High Fantasy.

Heroic Fantasy examples:

A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1), by Ursula K. Le Guin

Legend (Drenai and Rigante Series), by David Gemmell

The Deed of Paksenarrion, by Elizabeth Moon

Sword and Sorcery

In these tales, the protagonist roams an ancient, barbaric land, using a sword to fight evil. This genre tends to be described as full of swashbuckling action. It focuses heavily on the hand-to-hand combat and the sorcery part of it is usually assigned to the antagonist of the story. Typically the hero lives and dies by the sword and has to overcome the black magic of his foe. High Fantasy is another sub-genre of High Fantasy.

Sword and Sorcery examples:

The Broken Lands (Ardneh Sequence), by Fred Saberhagen

The Gilded Chain:: A Tale of the King’s Blades, by Dave Duncan

Bloodstone (Kane Series), by Karl Edward Wagner

Urban Fantasy / Modern Fantasy / Contemporary Fantasy

This sub-genre features a modern society in which magical elements are normal. Elves may coexist with humans in an urban setting. Dragons may wander freely in the alleys of a city. The contemporary time period may slowly be reverting to magical ways.

Urban Fantasy examples:

Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1), by Charlaine Harris

Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, Book 1), by Patricia Briggs

Storm Front (The Dresden Files), by Jim Butcher

Historical Fantasy

A historical setting with magical elements dominate the backdrop of these fantasy novels. Sometimes the setting is an alternate timeline in which magic has changed events in history.

Historical Fantasy Examples

Seventh Son (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 1), by Orson Scott Card

Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of Otori Series), by Lian Hearn

Queen of the Amazons (Alexander the Great), by Judith Tarr

Science Fantasy

Elements of both science fiction and fantasy blur together in these books.

Science Fantasy examples:

Dragonflight (Dragonriders of Pern – Volume 1), by Anne McCaffrey

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, Book 1), by Philip Pullman

A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeline L’Engle

Dark Fantasy

These are horror stories, full of vampires and demons. Dark Fantasy tends to be a blending of the horror and the fantasy genres where the setting is typically very much like the traditional fantasy setting complete with castles wizards and dragons but the incidents that occur have the tone and feel of horror. Vampires often play a major role in dark fantasy.

Dark Fantasy examples:

The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, Book 1), by Stephen King

The Thief of Always, by Clive Barker

Humorous Fantasy

Parody teaches us not to take things so seriously. Fantasy novels can be violent and dark, but relief is sight with humorous and lighter fantasy. Many Urban/Modern Fantasy series have taken the humorous side of fantasy with the vampire world, dating and romance.

Humorous Fantasy examples:

The Color of Magic, by Terry Pratchett

Myth Adventures One, by Robert Asprin

Undead and Unwed, (Betsy Taylor Series), by MaryJanice Davidson

Tired of the real world...want to live in a new one?

I was getting tired and bored with reality, with a world lacking magic, vampires, shapeshifters…a world lacking heroically epic battles to eliminate the evil and let the good prevail. I was tired of the real world, the one where you turn on the news and hear nothing but bad, where you cannot just use magic to teleport yourself, where you cannot change into a werecat when you want to get away. I was just over it! Fantasy has always been my favorite type of book, Harry Potter, The world of Sookie Stackhouse, The Sword of Truth…all worlds where I have loved living, all amazing authors with amazing stories.I got a sudden urge to dive into a new world….

So, with this feeling, I decided to look through my bookshelves and see if there was anything I have yet to read. I found a few series from long ago I had never read; The Shannara Series and The Belgariad & Mallorean, then found one I needed to reread; The Tales of the Alvin Maker …and so the obsession began. I found these two websites, Urban Fantasy Land and Epic-Fantasy.com that began my adventure and provided me with wonderful amazing series to read and after those the wonderful and amazing Wikipedia helped solidify each choice.

I asked myself the following questions when reading about a series to see if it would make the list or not (and please note this list grows each time I decided to reasearch or recieve a recomendation):

What is the world like? Is it magical?

What kind of Supernatural beings/things are involved?

What kind of powers do the inhabitants of the world have?

How long is the series? Has it ended or is it still growing?

With the answers to these questions, I have compiled a list of 16 amazing Epic Fantasy authors and 18 wonderful Urban Fantasy authors. I have placed each series in its recommended reading order and found where the endless short stories are placed within each series. From there, with this Blog, I plan to have a post with each series detailing what its all about as well as including the list with the short stories, places to find good prices on the books, places where you can sample chapters on the Internet, the authors website, the answers to my ‘deciding factor’ questions and new or updates on what is to come.

Please enjoy your stay and feel free to comment!! Welcome to my new obsession!!!
